8 DAYS / 7 NIGHTS
This safari has been carefully designed to give you a taste of the exciting, endless possibilities and can be tailored to suit your exact preferences.
DAY 1: JOHANNESBURG
Upon your arrival at O R Tambo International Airport you will be met by a representative from the &Beyond team who will transfer you to The Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa. Depending on your arrival time there might still be time to take part in some of the activities below available in Johannesburg.
Renowned as Africa’s richest square mile, the suburbs of Sandton offer visitors the opportunity to step into the world of upmarket shopping outlets, exclusive residential areas, boutique stores and first-class eateries. Home to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and top investment banks, Sandton has become South Africa’s bustling financial centre. Towering Manhattan-style skyscrapers dot this vibrant city, once a sleepy area that boasted smallholdings and sandy horse trails. Must-see attractions include Sandton City Shopping Centre, Nelson Mandela Square – home to the six metre bronze statue of the former president – the Montecasino complex, with its shops, restaurants, theatres and casinos, and the adjacent bird garden in the suburb of Fourways, as well as the South African National Museum of Military History.
Time permitting, you can choose to take a guided tour through the vibrant township of Soweto. See Vilakazi Street, home to two Nobel Peace Prize winners and visit the Hector Pietersen Museum. End your journey with a guided tour of the Apartheid Museum, which commemorates the legacy of apartheid and the miracle of transformation in South Africa.
Choose to visit Liliesleaf Farm, which was the secret hideout of the ANC during apartheid times, and learn about Mandela’s capture in the Rivonia Raid and the subsequent trial. Or choose to explore the historical Old Fort, built by Paul Kruger in 1893 and used as a prison, as well as the modern Constitutional Court, one of the world’s most sophisticated courtrooms. Then head to Alexandra, Johannesburg’s oldest township, where you can tour a workers’ hostel, sample local food and explore the colourful and vibrant culture.
Alternatively, you can choose to visit the Sterkfontein Caves, home to ancient discoveries such as the two-million-year-old Mrs Ples and the even older Little Foot. Tour the exhibition centre above ground before descending deep into the caves.
Spend one night at The Saxon Hotel, Villas & Spa in an Executive Luxury Room with ensuite bathroom. Your Executive Luxury Room will be situated within one of the villas at The Saxon. Your stay includes breakfast.
DAYS 2 & 3: SABI SAND GAME RESERVE
After breakfast, you will be transferred to the Federal Air hanger for your light aircraft flight to Ulusaba Airstrip. Upon arrival at the Airstrip you will be met and transferred to Leadwood Lodge.
Adjacent to the world renowned Kruger National Park, the Sabi Sand Game Reserve is famed for its intimate wildlife encounters, particularly leopard viewing. Home to a host of animals, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino), the Sabi Sand is part of a conservation area that covers over two million hectares (almost five million acres), an area equivalent to the state of New Jersey. With no boundary fences between the Sabi Sand and the Kruger National Park, this Reserve benefits from the great diversity of wildlife found in one of the richest wilderness areas on the African continent along with the additional benefits experienced on a private game reserve. Game drives traverse an area of 10 000 hectares (24 700 acres) and strict vehicle limits at sightings ensure the exclusivity of your game viewing experience. Off-road driving ensures that you have the best possible view of any exceptional sighting and rangers are constantly in touch with each other to keep track of animal movements.
Experience 2 nights at &Beyond Leadwood Lodge, on an exclusive-use basis. Each suite has an ensuite bathroom, outdoor shower and private plunge pool. Your stay includes accommodation, three meals daily, soft drinks, house wines, local brand spirits and beers, teas and coffees, refreshments on game drives, laundry, scheduled safari activities, nature walks (1 hour) accompanied by experienced armed trackers (subject to availability), emergency medical evacuation insurance as well as transfers to and from the airstrip (where applicable).
DAYS 4 & 5: PHINDA PRIVATE GAME RESERVE
Today another light aircraft flight will take you to &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve.
Set within easy reach of the Indian Ocean coastline and the famous iSimangaliso / Greater St Lucia Wetland Park in northern KwaZulu-Natal, &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve is known for its abundant wildlife, diversity of habitats and wide range of safari activities. Thanks to its coastal rainfall pattern, the Reserve enjoys a lush green environment that contains seven distinct ecosystems. &Beyond Phinda is often referred to as ‘Seven Worlds of Wonder.’ This fascinating variety of landscape and vegetation shelters an abundance of wildlife, including not only the Big Five but many rarer and less easily spotted species, such as the elusive cheetah or the scarce black rhino. With only a handful of lodges sharing an area of 23 000 hectares, and expert rangers and trackers in search of prime wildlife sightings, guests are assured an exclusive game viewing experience. Adding to Phinda’s wildlife charms, the marine diversity of nearby Sodwana Bay on the coast is easily accessible, with scuba diving, fishing and even turtle watching only some of the adventures available from Phinda.
Adventures include twice-daily game drives in open 4×4 safari vehicles, nature walks, excellent bird watching, riverboat cruises and canoeing along the Mzinene River. Optional Phinda Adventures, available at an additional cost, include scenic coastal flights, beach excursions including snorkelling and scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, turtle viewing (season Nov/Dec/Jan) and cultural visits. Specialist Safaris at Phinda (also at an additional cost) are Birding Safaris, Bush Skills Academy, Leopard Research, Rhino Capture and Research and the renowned Seven Wonders in Seven Days.
Enjoy 2 nights at &Beyond Phinda Zuka Lodge, on an exclusive use basis. Your stay includes three meals daily, soft drinks, house wines, local brand spirits and beers, teas and coffees, safari activities, refreshments on game drives, nature walks (1 hour) accompanied by experienced armed trackers (subject to availability), emergency medical evacuation insurance and laundry.
DAYS 6 & 7: CAPE TOWN
After a delicious breakfast you will be flown by light aircraft to King Shaka International Airport. On arrival at King Shaka International Airport, you will board a scheduled domestic SA Airlink flight to Cape Town. A representative of the &Beyond team will be waiting at Cape Town International Airport and will drive you to Ellerman House.
Spend two nights at Ellerman House in a 5 bedroom villa on an exclusive-use basis. Your stay includes made to order breakfast including fresh-pressed juices and home-baked breads and pastries, hand finished laundry packed in tissue paper, complimentary teas, coffees, spirits and beer, fully stocked in-room bar with luxury brands, guest pantry with wide selection of snacks and in-between meal options, sunset cocktails, broadband wireless Internet access and 24-hour security.
Spend the next few days enjoying the extraordinary beauty of this scenic town and its surroundings with your choice of exciting activities.
Indulge in a full day in the spectacular Cape Winelands, beginning with your first wine tasting on the way to Franschhoek, home to award-winning wine estates and known as South Africa’s gourmet capital. Drive past the Groot Drakenstein Prison, where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated before his release and where he took his first steps as a free man. Visit the village of Franschhoek and see the Huguenot monument. Enjoy wine tasting in and around Franschhoek before stopping in the village for lunch. Continue your journey through the panoramic landscapes of the Helshoogte Mountain Pass, stopping for a third wine tasting in the area, time permitting. Your adventure ends with a leisurely stroll along the oak-lined streets of the university town of Stellenbosch, well known for its traditional Cape Dutch architecture.
Or, if you prefer to explore the Winelands in a truly unique style, travel to one of the country’s premier wine estate by helicopter. After tasting some of the Cape’s famous vintages, you can choose to return to Cape Town on the back of a vintage motorcycle, drinking in magnificent views of the coastline.
Back in Cape Town, choose to take a cable car to the top of iconic Table Mountain and marvel at the magnificent views from its flat top. Browse vibrant Greenmarket Square, one of the city’s oldest markets, and walk through Company Garden, established by Dutch settlers in 1652. Visit the traditional Malay Quarter, with it brightly coloured houses, and indulge in a glimpse into one of the city’s vibrant cultures.
If you are a history buff, set out on a ferry ride to Robben Island, best known as the site of a jailhouse for political prisoners, including former South African president and Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela. Your tour of the island is guided by a former political inmate, which means you will hear first-hand tales of its story of hope and hardship.
A tour of Cape Point will drive you through the lovely scenery of the Cape Peninsula to beautiful Hout Bay and over the truly awe-inspiring Chapman’s Peak Drive. Touch on the continent’s most south-western point at the Cape of Good Hope and admire the views from the old lighthouse at Cape Point.
DAY 8: DEPARTURE
After a delicious breakfast you will be driven back to Cape Town International Airport, where your adventure with us will end.
