Up close with an African rock python

Tailormade African Safaris by the Safari Legends

Recently at Senalala Luxury Safari Camp, in the Greater Kruger National Park, we had a great sighting of an African rock python. It was such an amazing experience that we just had to share the story with you!

Even though the park has all types of spectacular animals that are unique marvels of nature, the focus tends to fall on trying to spot the “Big Five”, taking away potentially missed sightings of the many of the other ‘smaller’, and sometimes intimidating, creatures that the reserve has to offer.

Fortunately for us, this python turned into a great sighting on an afternoon game drive and one of the guests managed to capture these great images.

The African rock python (Python sebae natalensis) is one of two python species occurring in Africa and although it is relatively harmless, it is Africa’s largest snake and capable of eating a 40kg antelope.

Under threat from hunting and loss of habitat, this natural beauty is distinguished by its scaly patterns consisting of blotches in an array of colours, including brown, chestnut, yellow, black, grey and olive. Distinctive heat-sensitive pits located around the lips are utilised to detect warm-blooded prey.

They can grow up to 4.5 metres and are an awesome sight as they slowly make their way through the bush.

Over the years, we have had several ‘encounters’ while out in the bush and for most of Senalala’s guests it has become a memory of a lifetime viewing Africa’s largest snake from the safety of the vehicle.

Below is a photo of the most recent encounter we had with a python right after it had killed a juvenile impala. This amazing experience is something rarely seen, even by those that have lived in the bush for years!
