Hidden amongst the foothills of the spectacular Virungas — a chain of 15 000 foot volcanoes that lie in what is thought to be the heart of the legendary land of King Solomon’s mines, is the beautiful Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge.
Here, surrounded by the tropical forests of Rwanda, just a stone’s throw away from the renowned Parc National des Volcans, guests can unwind in one of five luxurious stone cottages, two suites or, for small groups, an elegant family suite — each with a large sitting room, fireplace, stylish ensuite bathroom and private veranda. Scrumptious menus can be savoured in the beautiful dining room and refreshing sundowners can be enjoyed on any one of the two patios that provide breathtaking views of the Virunga volcanoes.
After an adventure-filled day guests can retreat to the library cum games room or brush up on their knowledge in the responsible tourism/community awareness room. Adventures include hikes into the Parc National des Volcans in search of the majestic mountain gorilla and the enchanting golden monkey, cultural excursions, visits to the lava flows outside Ruhengeri town and vibrant village markets or to the Dian Fossey Memorial and Research Centre.
Accommodation at Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge comprises six cottages, two suites, one family cottage. All are stone buildings with Rwandese terracotta tile roofs, and feature large sitting areas, fireplaces, stylish en-suite bathrooms finished with Venetian plaster a dressing room and a sheltered veranda. Heat exchangers in the fireplaces provide a plentiful supply of hot water. The family cottage comprises two independent ensuite rooms connected by a shared verandah. The main lodge building comprises reception, sitting room with snug area, dining room, library / games room, a responsible tourism / community awareness room, shop and bathrooms. Three large fireplaces provide warmth and all rooms are finished with a polished wooden floor. Two patio areas afford wonderful and dramatic views to the Virunga Volcanoes and the surrounding lowland farmland.
The main attraction of Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is its proximity to the Virunga Mountains and the Parc National des Volcans where clients trek on foot to see the magnificent Mountain Gorilla. Gorilla trekking is perhaps one of the most dramatic, thrilling and poignant wildlife experiences possible. There are, however, plenty of other natural, cultural and social excursions on offer to help you make the most of your stay. At Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge we offer specialized massage treatments designed to relax refresh and re-juvinate you after a hike to see the mountain Gorillas. From the lodge we offer escorted bird watching walks, escorted walks and escorted mountain bike excursions in the local area. Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is located on the edge of the Volcanoes National Park and a 15 minute drive from the parks headquarters where all activities in the Park start from. Activities on offer in the Volcanes National Park include Gorilla trekking, treks to see the Golden Monkeys, as well as lots of treks and hikes to view the volcanoes and its hidden treasures.
