DAY 1 & 2: CHOBE NATIONAL PARK
On arrival at Kasane Airport you will be warmly welcomed by a member of the &Beyond team, who will drive you to the camp or lodge of your choice in Chobe National Park.
Chobe National Park is definitely a place to visit on your Botswana safari. It is located in Botswana’s North West District, with the Chobe River forming the Park’s northern border. It is flanked in the south west by the Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve, and by the Chobe forest, which run parallel to the Zimbabwe border, in the east. The Chobe Floodplains and Chobe River provide a sensitive ecosystem where the wildlife of Botswana concentrates during the dry season. It is not uncommon to see between 500 and 5 000 elephants on these floodplains. The highlight of a visit to Chobe National Park is the combination of wildlife, birdlife and reptiles found along the banks of the Chobe River.
Spend two nights at Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero. Awaken to a chorus of birdlife welcoming the dawn and enjoy a steaming cup of fresh coffee or tea. As the day heats up, sway with the motion of your 4×4 vehicle, keeping an eager eye out for what the next bend in the road may reveal. Follow the flashes of colour as birds flit between the trees along the river. Listen enthralled to the rumbling, trumpeting, rustling symphony of some of the world’s largest elephant herds. Capture the perfect photo of a sunbathing crocodile or try your luck at stealing his lunch and land some of the abundant tilapia using light fishing tackle. Step onto the low deck of a river boat and feel the current tug you onward. Pause in reverent stillness as the riverbank slowly fills up with elephant then share their delight as the whole herd piles in for a swim.
DAY 3 & 4: OKAVANGO DELTA
After a delicious breakfast you will be driven to the nearest airstrip, where you will hop abroad a light aircraft for a flight to the camp or lodge of your choice in the Okavango Delta.
The Okavango Delta is the world’s largest inland delta and a miracle of nature. This paradisiacal oasis of islands and waterways flowers in the middle of the arid Kalahari Desert. Guided dugout canoe (mokoro) trips take you into the heart of the Delta and up close to excellent game viewing and bird watching. This remarkable region is a Wetland of International Importance (RAMSAR site) due to its unique ecosystem. Most visitors to Botswana rate the Okavango Delta as the highlight of their trip and it is not hard to see why – in terms of pristine beauty, remote location and rich diversity of animal and bird life, the Okavango Delta is unbeatable.
A maze of sparkling lagoons, meandering channels and overgrown islands teeming with wildlife, the Delta’s crystal-clear channels spread over the thirstlands of the Kalahari with their papyrus-fringed banks and fertile floating islands. Adapted for a life in and out of water, the elegant red lechwe and shy sitatunga are found in this watery wilderness. Lion, cheetah, leopard and African wild dog share the floodplains with large herds of elephant and buffalo. Hippo inhabits the deeper channels and lagoons, while honeybadgers may be seen in broad daylight. Tall termite mounds are homes for families of dwarf and banded mongoose.
Spend two nights at &Beyond Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge.
DAY 5 & 6: MAKGADIKGADI PANS
After a delicious breakfast you will be driven back to the airstrip, where you will board a light aircraft flight to Maun. A member of the &Beyond team will be waiting to assist you onto another flights to the camp or lodge of your choice in the Makgadikgadi Pans.
The largest salt pans in the world, the Makgadikgadi Pans are a breathtaking sight – a vast sea of white that was once the centre of a huge lake that evaporated more than 2 000 years ago. This panorama of white sand and salt supports one of Africa’s largest zebra populations. When the rains fall during the wet season, the pans fill with water and attract large numbers of zebra, springbok and wildebeest, followed closely by predators, making for fantastic game viewing. Spectacular breeding colonies of flamingos can also be seen.
Shimmering miles of white are made up of surreal landscapes where flocks of swallows soar in ragged formation and elephant tracks appear seemingly out of nowhere, blending into a sense of endless space. In the midst of this nothingness lies Kubu Island, a granite outcrop walled with companies of baobab reaching stubby branches towards the sky.
In this extraordinary and almost lunar landscape guests can stand on the spot where the mighty Zambezi River once flowed into a gigantic lake that covered these pans, leaving behind a beach full of smooth pebbles. At the world’s biggest breeding site of greater flamingos unusual mud nests wait for their inhabitants’ annual return.
Spend two nights at Jack’s Camp in the Makgadikgadi Pans.
