A visit to the PhotoMashatu photographic hides is a highlight activity for many guests. Besides offering the most incredible photographic opportunity, just being in such close proximity to the animals in their environment is special.

Mashatu is currently the largest employer in the Bobirwa District and many of the helping hands at camp have been working for Mashatu for 10 years or more. This team always witnesses excited guests returning from the hide with tales of great sightings and good photos, but many of them have never had the opportunity to visit the hide themselves. Taking advantage of a very rare, quiet day at camp, the PhotoMashatu team invited a group of the housekeeping ladies to the hide.

Within five minutes of their arrival, a herd of elephants came in.  Elephants are often seen from camp and are ever present in their communities back home, but there was sheer excitement viewing these giants from a completely different angle. The expressions on the ladies’ faces expressed just how special it is having an elephant mere meters away from you, as you watch them from ground level.

The ladies were given an opportunity to shoot with a DSLR camera with some guidance from Aubrey and Janet, the resident PhotoMashatu photographers.

It didn’t take long for them to get the hang of it and some great shots were captured.  In future, when guests return from the hide, these ladies will know exactly what all the fuss is about.
