Project Description

Ascend the highest mountain in Africa on this once-in-a-lifetime, 9-day Kilimanjaro hiking tour.

Conquer Kilimanjaro

Conquer Mount Kilimanjaro on this exceptional 9-day hiking adventure to the “Roof of Africa”. This once-in-a-lifetime journey, can be taken as a standalone tour or as an add-on to an East Africa safari.

It will take you along the beautiful Machame Route to the summit of Kilimanjaro, where you will have the opportunity to rest at various campsites along the way. The hike is led by expert guides, with years of experience climbing this majestic mountain.

You will also be assisted by a friendly crew of mountaineers to ensure your Kilimanjaro experience is truly unforgettable. The route winds through a spectacular array of landscapes, which include verdant afromontane forests, a heath zone of yellow helichrysum (also known as golden eternal flowers) and purple lobelia plants, alpine forests and glacial valleys, making for exceptional photographic opportunities.

This adventure has been carefully designed to give you a taste of the exciting, endless possibilities and can be tailored to suit your exact preferences.

Upon your arrival at Arusha Airport, you will be met by an &Beyond representative who will drive you to Arusha Coffee Lodge.

This attractive little town is situated beneath the towering peaks of Mt. Meru and Kilimanjaro. Arusha, renowned as the safari capital of Tanzania, offers a plethora of attractions and adventures. The town has numerous first-class restaurants, bars and markets to browse, and is the ideal place to spend a few relaxing days before embarking on a safari or attempting to scale Kilimanjaro. Not-to-be-missed is the Arusha National Park (in Ngurdoto Crater), the National Natural History Museum, the Laetoli Footprints (set in volcanic ash, dating back 3 500 000 years) and the beautiful coffee plantations, which dot the landscape.

Spend one night at Arusha Coffee Lodge in a plantation room with ensuite bathroom. Your stay includes bed and breakfast.

After breakfast, you will be met by a representative from Hoopoe Safaris who will collect you for your Kilimanjaro adventure. At the Machame Gate, your crew will finalise your packing and administrative arrangements before you begin your climb. Today’s hiking is through verdant Afromontane forest to Machame Camp. During your ascent you will stop for a delicious picnic lunch. Look out for pretty endemic flora and a graduation of forest zones.

Spend one night at Machame Camp (full board).

Today, after a wholesome breakfast, you will begin your hike to Shira Camp. The first section of the climb is relatively steep and altitude is gained rapidly. A picnic lunch will be served on the trail. The zone you pass through today is known as the heath zone where attractive helichrysum and lobelia plants become apparent. Various geologic features can be seen from lava tubes to glacial valleys.

Spend one night at Shira Camp, on a full board basis.

Today, you will make your way to Barranco Camp. You will ascend into an alpine desert and for those that are feeling strong enough, you can even head up to Lava Tower before descending to the camp. A picnic lunch will be served on the trail. Although this is a long day of hiking, you will have a great opportunity to acclimatise as the next time you head to this altitude will be in two days’ time.

Spend one night at Barranco Camp, on a full board basis.

Today, you will ascend the Barranco Wall and hike through glacial valleys to Karanga Camp. As a relatively short hiking day, lunch will be served at the camp. In the afternoon a walk can be taken with your guides for great views and photographic opportunities of the southern walls of Kibo and deep glacial valleys.

Spend one night at Karanga Camp, on a full board basis.

After a delicious breakfast you will leave camp for another half day of hiking, which will take you to Barafu Camp. Once again, lunch will be taken in camp, allowing plenty of time to relax before your summit bid. At dusk, enjoy an early dinner and take in the magnificent site of the Mawenzi peak, before retiring for a good night’s rest.

Today, you will make your way to the awe-inspiring summit under the cloak of darkness. Most hikers depart just before midnight for the final summit bid. Patience and persistence is the name of game to reach the pinnacle of Kilimanjaro and by dawn, as the first rays of light start to appear, most arrive near its rim. Ascending via Stella Point affords a relatively short final section to Uhuru peak, the Roof of Africa!

After well-deserved celebrations you will make your way down the mountain. Your goal for your descent is to reach Mweka Camp before dusk.

Spend one night at Mweka Camp, on a full board basis.

After a wholesome breakfast, you will descend through montane forest and around midday, after saying farewell to your crew, you will be collected and driven back to Arusha Coffee Lodge.
