Join us at Chikwenya to be part of an amazing conservation project: The Zimbabwe Wild Dog Translocation.

Wild Dogs on the Move

Wilderness Safaris and Painted Dog Conservation (PDC), long-time partners in driving the conservation of wild dog in Zimbabwe, are partnering in a thrilling event: expanding the wild dog population of Mana Pools. A pack of these Endangered animals will be translocated from Hwange National Park to Chikwenya Camp, next to Mana Pools National Park where they will be held in a boma in order to acclimatise to the area over a period of months. Further demonstrating the company’s conservation commitment, the move will help to increase the current wild dog population in Mana Pools while mitigating the threat of human-wildlife conflict in Hwange.

As the boma is being built within walking distance of camp, our guests at Chikwenya can be part of this amazing opportunity, viewing the dogs from September until the end of the season in November 2019, and then again when they are released in 2020.

Wild Dogs on the Move

Wilderness Safaris has introduced the concept of ‘guest science’ across our areas, where our guests actively take part in or are up-close witnesses to research or conservation efforts. At Chikwenya on 23 September, our guests will not only learn more about wild dogs but also be able to watch the dogs being moved and released into the boma.

Wild Dogs on the Move

Key Dates in September:

22 September

BBC Earth’s Dynasties, Episode 4, on the wild dog known as “Blacktip”, will be screened in camp, while guides will be on hand to discuss the process for the following day.

23 September

Wild dog relocation scheduled to take place: Chikwenya guests meet the aircraft and watch as the dogs are released into the boma.

Enjoy dinner with Peter Blinston of Painted Dog Conservation as he shares insights and more about his research and conservation work with wild dogs.

We recommend a three-night stay to ensure you catch all the action, and have time to enjoy all that the area has to offer – from game drives and walks, to canoeing, photography and more.

From 23 September onwards

Chikwenya guests continue to visit the boma and watch the dogs as they settle into their new home, while learning more about these imperilled animals and their conservation.

Wilderness Safaris and Painted Dog Conservation: About Our Partnership:

Wilderness Safaris Zimbabwe has partnered with Painted Dog Conservation to help drive the conservation of wild dog in Mana Pools and Hwange National Parks. With many of our guests wanting to know exactly how their journeys are making a positive impact, Wilderness Safaris has introduced the concept of ‘guest science’, offering an opportunity to actively take part in the research being conducted on the ground – by taking photos, dates and times of any wild dog sighting while at Chikwenya Camp. Through our guest scientists, funds and awareness about the plight of wild dogs are raised, thus helping drive these critical conservation efforts.

About Chikwenya

Situated on the eastern boundary of Mana Pools National Park, Chikwenya is a photographer’s paradise as it looks out over an open floodplain and the broad Zambezi River, with a backdrop provided by the mountains of the Rift Valley escarpment.

The camp is surrounded by a dense forest of albida and Natal mahogany trees, which provide deep shade in the heat of the day. The albidas shed their protein-rich pods during the dry season, providing vital sustenance for many species, particularly elephant.

Wild Dogs on the Move

Chikwenya’s seven tents (including two family units) stand on low wooden decks with pine walkways linking them to the raised main area. The lounge, dining and bar area are places of hospitality and relaxation, and a pool and deck offer alternate spaces to enjoy the scenery and passing wildlife.

NOTE: Chikwenya is open seasonally between April and mid/late November.
