Little Makalolo Camp in the Hwange National Park
Little Makalolo Camp lies in the heart of one of the best game viewing areas in Hwange National Park. Overlooking a vibrant waterhole, it offers privacy for guests who enjoy small camps and a sense of remoteness. The camp’s six traditional-style tents – including a family unit – are spacious and en-suite, with indoor and outdoor showers. Solar power is used for tent lights and to heat water, ensuring a lighter environmental footprint.
The tented rooms each have en-suite facilities, including a flush toilet, and shower with hot and cold running water – as well as an outdoor shower under the stars. The main living area is under canvas and houses the dining room, lounge and pub, and a small plunge pool.
The camp overlooks a small waterhole and guests can enjoy game viewing during the “siesta” hours a tree house hide. Activities at Little Makalolo centre on game viewing in open 4×4 vehicles throughout the Makalolo concession area, as well as walks with armed guides.
The area is ecologically diverse, ensuring a varied food “pantry”, which feeds great numbers of animals year round. Makalolo is one of the best areas for predators, Buffalo and Elephant – all featuring regularly in the experience.
Little Makalolo Camp Game Viewing
Summer sees the large antelope herds migrate onto the plains, closely followed by their predators. Elephants, Buffalo, Sable, Roan, Giraffe, Wildebeest, Impala and sometimes even Gemsbok can be seen here. The area is one of the best for predators – Lion, Leopard, Wild Dog and Cheetah are regularly sighted, along with the smaller African Wild Cat, Serval, Honey Badger, Civet and Hyena. The area has a number of waterholes which attract game in large concentrations, especially during the winter months. Guests can sit at a waterhole and watch the passing parade of animals as they come to quench their thirst. For the bird watcher, Makalolo offers a wonderful range of birding, from Miombo species right through to the Kalahari species.
